History of the Fillmore Center

The Beginnings of 4100 W. Fillmore

In 1889, William Monroe Wright and George Rew launched the Calumet Baking Powder Company in Chicago. In 1913, the company opened a new factory in Chicago's North Lawndale community at 4100 W. Fillmore, where hundreds of people worked to manufacture the now-iconic baking product. In 1929, General Mills purchased the Calumet Baking Powder Company and began to manufacture syrup at 4100 W. Fillmore.

When Fillmore Center partners took ownership of the building in 2023, it had sat largely vacant for more than a decade. Its location in the heart of North Lawndale made the building an ideal setting for a project to benefit residents of the community through the creation of jobs and community wealth.
